Ginger Cranberry Cocktail (Frozen Vodka or Gin)

For the ginger syrup:
- 4-inch piece of ginger, peeled and roughly chopped
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 cups water
For the cocktail:
- 1 cup frozen cranberries
- Juice of 1 lime
- 2 cups vodka or gin
- 2 cups cranberry juice
- 1 cup ginger syrup, adjust to taste
- Splash of club soda
- Fresh ginger shavings for garnish

- Make the ginger syrup: Combine all the syrup ingredients in a saucepan and simmer until the sugar dissolves and the ginger flavor infuses the syrup, about 20 minutes. Strain and cool completely before using.
- Prepare the cocktail: Lightly crush frozen cranberries in a large pitcher. Add the lime juice along with any squeezed lime wedges. Pour in vodka or gin, cranberry juice, and the cooled ginger syrup. Fill lowball glasses about two-thirds full with ice, pour the mixture, top with club soda, and garnish with shaved fresh ginger.
Note: To serve as a martini, omit the club soda.
