Ingredients
- 2 cups dark molasses
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- Pour the molasses into a heavy aluminum or unlined copper saucepan. Heat over medium flame until it boils.
- Continue boiling until it reaches the hard-ball stage (250266F on a candy thermometer).

- Transfer to a well-greased marble slab, heavy platter, or baking sheet. Let cool until edges firm up.
- Dampen hands with ice water. Grab a -cup ball of taffy and stretch it back and forth until it turns golden and glossy.
- As it hardens, twist, braid, or shape into sticks, knots, or your favorite forms.
