- teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 cup whole milk, at room temperature
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Canola oil, for frying
- Confectioners' sugar, for dusting
- Strawberry Sauce, for serving (recipe below)
- Chocolate hazelnut spread, warmed, for dipping
Strawberry Sauce
Yield: 2 cups
- 2 pints strawberries, hulled and halved
- cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a larger bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, eggs, sugar, and vanilla extract, whisking until smooth. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet, stirring gently until the batter resembles slightly lumpy pancake batter. Get ready to create carnival magic in your kitchen!
- Fill a large Dutch oven with canola oil to about 2 inches deep. Attach a deep-fry thermometer and heat over medium-high to 370F (188C).
- In batches, use a 2-tablespoon cookie scoop to drop batter into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes, turning halfway. Maintain oil temperature as needed. Drain on a wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet. Cool slightly, dust generously with powdered sugar, and serve warm, drizzled with strawberry sauce and chocolate hazelnut spread for dipping. Watch them disappear!
Strawberry Sauce
- Combine strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, then simmer, stirring occasionally, until berries break down, about 10 minutes.
- Puree in a blender until smooth. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. Your perfect sweet companion is ready!
