  • Cooking time: 40 minutes

Ingredients for Cake:

  • 1 box (18 1/4 ounces) German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 stick of butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ounce of red food coloring

Ingredients for Cream Cheese Layer:

  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your grill for indirect cooking over medium heat. Lightly coat a 9 by 13-inch foil pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on low speed, blend the cake mix, softened butter, egg, and red food coloring until well combined. Evenly press this mixture into the prepared pan.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar on medium speed until smooth and creamy. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, then mix until combined. Spread this cream cheese mixture evenly over the cake layer.
  4. Place the foil pan into another foil pan for extra support and insulation. Set it on the hot grill away from direct heat. Cover and bake for 40 to 50 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through.
  5. Remove from the grill and allow to cool fully before slicing.
  6. Oven Option: Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly grease a 9 by 13-inch baking pan. Prepare the bars as described above and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the edges begin to slightly pull away from the pan. Let cool completely before cutting into bars.
