Imagine the cozy scent of cinnamon and caramelized sugar filling your kitchen, evoking cherished family memories from the Pacific Northwest orchards. Bursting with backyard apple abundance, this irresistible treat transforms simple fruit into a fan-folded delightperfectly baked to maximize crispy edges and gooey sweetness. Pair it with creamy vanilla ice cream for pure bliss, and easily double for a crowd by using a larger dish and extending bake time.
Ingredients
- 1 large apple (any type), peeled, cored, and sliced in half lengthwise
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Vanilla ice cream, optional, for topping
Directions
- Set oven rack in the middle of your oven and heat oven to 400F. Line a small baking dish with parchment paper.
- Position an apple half, curved side up, on a cutting board. Beginning at one end, cut downward at 1/8-inch intervals, slicing almost all the way through but not quite to the bottom to keep the apple intact and create a fan pattern. To avoid cutting through, use a pair of chopsticks positioned lengthwise on either side of the apple for stability and to act as barriers for your knife.
- Transfer the prepared apple halves, flat side down, into the parchment-lined dish. With a pastry brush, thoroughly brush the melted butter over the tops, bottoms, and into the slices. In a small dish, mix the cinnamon and sugar together, then sprinkle this blend evenly across the apple halves and let it settle into the cuts as well.
- Bake on the center rack until the apples are fork-tender and starting to brown at the edges, about 20 to 25 minutes. Serve directly from the oven, ideally with vanilla ice cream if desired.
