Cake Mixture:
- 3/4 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/3 cup melted butter
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Sauce Layer:
- 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup tightly packed light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/4 cups boiling water

- Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
- For the cake: Whisk together the sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla, then stir until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter into an ungreased 9-inch square baking dish and smooth the top with an offset spatula for even baking.
- For the sauce: Whisk the white and brown sugars with the cocoa and sprinkle the mixture evenly over the batter. Carefully pour the boiling water over the surfacedo not stir.
- Bake about 30 minutes, until the center bubbles and looks almost set (slightly underbaked). Remove from the oven and let rest 15 minutes. Serve by spooning the sauce from the bottom of the pan over portions and pairing with mint chocolate chip ice cream.
