Ingredients
- 1 stick salted butter
- 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 bananas
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
- 1/2 cup dark rum
- Dash of cinnamon
- Vanilla ice cream, for serving
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Add the brown sugar and stir together, cooking for a couple of minutes. Then pour in the cream, stirring to blend everything.
- Peel the bananas and slice them diagonally. Add the banana slices to the pan. Next, mix in the chopped nuts. Carefully stir in the rumthis is where caution is needed. Let the mixture bubble, then ignite it carefully using a long lighter. Keep a lid nearby to smother the flame if necessary. Allow the flame to burn off naturally (about 30 seconds), then stir in the cinnamon. You may skip the flamb step if preferred.
- Serve immediately by spooning the warm bananas Foster over several scoops of vanilla ice cream.
- You can also pour bananas Foster over French toast, waffles, or crepes. If you want to try something different, substitute peaches, pears, or cherries for the bananas. Just note, then it wouldn't truly be bananas Foster.
Note: Be very cautious when cooking with alcohol near an open flame.
