This drink reimagines the classic Saturn cocktail a tiki-style cocktail named for the Saturn rocket and swaps traditional almond orgeat for a more sustainable sunflower seed version. The original Saturn combines passionfruit, lemon, gin, falernum, and orgeat; this variation honors the Triple Threat Titans with a sunflower seed orgeat twist.
Ingredients
- 1 3/4 oz gin
- 1/2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1/2 oz Sunflower Seed Orgeat (recipe below)
- 1/4 oz falernum liqueur
- 1/4 oz passionfruit puree
- Garnishes: orange twist, edible flower, pineapple leaf
Method
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the gin, lemon juice, Sunflower Seed Orgeat, falernum, and passionfruit puree.
- Shake vigorously until well chilled.
- Pour into a hurricane glass over crushed ice and garnish with an orange twist, an edible flower, and a pineapple leaf.
Sunflower Seed Orgeat
Ingredients:
- 2 cups sunflower seeds
- Granulated sugar (equal to the volume of strained sunflower milk; amount as needed)
- 4 cups water (for simmering)
Instructions:
- Toast the sunflower seeds in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until they begin to pop and smell toasted (about 5 minutes).
- Add 4 cups water, reduce heat to low, and simmer gently (do not boil) for about 15 minutes.
- Transfer the mixture to a food processor and pulse until coarsely ground.
- Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing to extract as much liquid as possible; discard solids. You now have sunflower seed milk.
- Measure the volume of the sunflower milk and return it to the bowl; add an equal volume of granulated sugar while the liquid is warm and stir until dissolved.
- Strain the orgeat once more into a sealed container and refrigerate for up to one week.
Garnish note: For this recipe, prepare a rounded, Bauhaus-inspired orange peel for the garnish.
