With many shopping malls closing, you can still enjoy the nostalgic taste of mall pretzels at home. If you like, sprinkle coarse salt on the pretzels before baking and skip the buttery glaze; serve them with a big bowl of yellow mustard for a savory contrast.
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour (for dusting)
- 1 pound frozen pizza dough, thawed and at room temperature
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 stick (8 tablespoons) salted butter, melted
- Cinnamon sugar (for dusting)
- Caramel sauce (for serving)
- Chocolate sauce (for serving)
Special equipment
- Nonstick aluminum foil
Instructions
Lightly flour a work surface and roll the pizza dough to just under 1/4 inch thick into a rectangle. Cut the dough into 1-inch wide strips. Roll each strip into a rope, bring the ends together, cross them twice with the ends pointing outward, then fold the ends over the twists and press toward the inside of the loop to seal.
Line a baking sheet with nonstick foil. In a medium saucepan, combine 5 cups water and the baking soda and bring to a gentle boil. Immerse each pretzel in the boiling water for 30 to 45 seconds, then remove with a slotted spatula, shake off excess water, and place on the prepared baking sheet about 1 inch apart.
Preheat the oven to 375F (190C).
Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown. When they come out of the oven, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Serve warm with caramel and chocolate sauces for dipping or drizzling.
