Main Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground turkey
  • 1 1/2 cups bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup chopped red onion
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Neelys' BBQ Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon crab boil seasoning (suggested: Old Bay)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups Neelys BBQ Sauce (set aside 1/2 cup for topping)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Neelys BBQ Seasoning

  • 1 1/2 cups paprika
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 3/4 tablespoons onion powder

Neelys BBQ Sauce

Yield: Approximately 3 1/2 cups

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 5 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

Prepare the Seasoning & Sauce

  1. Mix all BBQ seasoning ingredients in a bowl until well blended. Store in an airtight container for up to six months.
  2. Combine all BBQ sauce ingredients in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring often, for about 1 hour and 15 minutes until thickened.

Make the Meatloaf

  1. Set your oven to 350F (175C) to preheat.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the BBQ seasoning, crab boil seasoning, soy sauce, beaten egg, 1 cup of the prepared BBQ sauce, and Worcestershire sauce.
  3. Heat olive oil in a saut pan over medium-high heat; add the chopped onion, diced bell pepper, salt, pepper, and minced garlic. Cook until the vegetables soften. Remove from heat and add this to the wet ingredients bowl.
  4. Pour this mixture into a bowl containing the ground turkey. Stir in the bread crumbs and mix everything together thoroughly using your hands.
  5. Place the blended meat on a baking sheet or dish. Form the meat into an oval or rectangular loaf shape by hand. Alternatively, press the meat into a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  6. Spread the reserved 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce over the top.
  7. Bake for 35 minutes. Take the loaf out, and return it to the oven for an additional 20 minutes until cooked through.
