Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon firmly packed orange zest
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 8 slices sweet batard or brioche, cut 1-inch thick
- 3 to 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (about 1/2 stick)
- Honeyed Strawberries (see below)
For Honeyed Strawberries
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1/2 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped out
- 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 pound strawberries, hulled and halved lengthwise
Instructions
- In a broad bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, brown sugar, orange zest, vanilla extract, ground cardamom, and salt until the eggs are fully combined and the mixture is smooth. Submerge 3 slices of bread in the custard, flipping once, so each slice is evenly saturated, about 4 minutes total.
- Meanwhile, warm 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. When the butter begins to foam, add the 3 soaked bread slices and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining bread, adding more butter as needed. Serve warm topped with Honeyed Strawberries.
Honeyed Strawberries
- Serves: 4 to 6
- In a medium bowl, stir together the honey, vanilla seeds, and fresh orange juice until the honey dissolves.
- Add the strawberries and gently toss to coat. Let stand at least 5 minutes, until the berries release some juice; stir gently before serving.
